JOHN 6:26 - 40 (Kent Smith Notes 10-10-24)
THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST
JOHN 6:26-40
***************************************************************
The Signs that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the Living God.
Water into Wine
Healing the Nobleman’s Son
Healing the lame man at the pool of Bethesda
Feeding the 5000
Walking on the water and stilling the storm.
John also records several of the teachings of Jesus,
Some were shared with crowds and some were shared just with the disciples.

THE SETTING FOR HIS TEACHING
When did you get here?
You just wanted more free food!
What can we do so we can do the works of God?
The work of God is to believe in whom He has sent.
What do you do for a sign that we might believe?
Moses gave our fathers bread in the wilderness.
God gave you the bread in the wilderness!
The bread that comes from heaven gives life to the world.
Always give us this bread!
*******************************************************************
We ended last week with the crowd asking “When did you get here?”
Jesus responds that they are seeking Him so that they can get more free food.
Not wanting to have to depend on Him for miraculous food, they ask, “What shall we do, so that we can do the works of God?”
Jesus answered, “This is the work of God – that you believe in Him whom He has sent!”
So, they responded, “What do you do for a sign that we would believe you?”
(Some of these are the same ones who were fed by Him just a short time earlier!}
The people bolster their request by reminding Jesus that Moses showed that he was God’s prophet by providing manna from heaven.
Jesus counters by saying it was God who gave the bread from heaven, and that the true bread from heaven gives life to the world.
The people said, “Lord, always give us this bread.” (Still wanting the food!)

THE SUBSTANCE OF ETERNAL LIFE
“I AM THE BREAD OF LIFE”
He who comes to Me will not hunger.
He who believes in Me will never thirst.
You have seen Me but do not believe
***********************************************************************
John 6:35-36 Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me will not hunger, and he who believes in Me will never thirst. 36 But I said to you that you have seen Me, and yet do not believe.
They still don’t get it!! It’s all about Jesus!

THE SOVEREIGNTY OF ETERNAL LIFE
“ALL THAT THE FATHER GIVES ME WILL COME TO ME”
The one who comes to Me I will certainly not cast out.
*********************************************************************
John 6:37 All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will certainly not cast out.
Come to Him for forgiveness. Come to him for meaning. Come to Him for life and sustenance. He is the bread of life.
Come to Him.
Sovereignty: The Father gives us to Him
Free Will : Jesus speaks “Of the one who comes to me.”

THE SERVANT OF ETERNAL LIFE
“I HAVE COME DOWN TO DO THE FATHER’S WILL.”
This is the will of Him who sent Me:
That OF ALL that HE HAS GIVEN ME I lose nothing but raise it up on the last day.
*********************************************************************
John 6:38-39 For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me. This is the will of Him who sent Me, that of all that He has given Me I lose nothing, but raise it up on the last day.
If you are saved, you will remain saved, not because of your efforts or behavior, because He will not lose YOU!

THE SOURCE OF ETERNAL LIFE
“EVERYONE WHO BEHOLDS THE SON AND BELIEVES IN HIM WILL HAVE ETERNAL LIFE.”
And I Myself will raise him up on the last day.
********************************************************************
John 6:40 For this is the will of My Father, that everyone who BEHOLDS the Son and BELIEVES in Him will have eternal life, and I Myself will raise him up on the last day.”
It is all about Jesus.
God has chosen in His sovereign plan to make life with Him dependent on having a relationship with His Son.
We must become acquainted with what Jesus has done for us: BEHOLD
Lived a sinless life.
Died a death to satisfy the wrath of God against our sin.
Rose from the dead as proof of His divinity and power over sin and death.
Then we must BELIEVE that He is who He said He was, He did what the Word said He did, and that His life and death means what He said it did.

THE SURRENDER UNTO ETERNAL LIFE
Seek
Surrender
Submit
***********************************************************************
Seek the Lord while He may be found. Is God speaking to you today? Today is the day of salvation. Do not neglect or ignore what God is impressing upon your heart today.
Surrender to the influence of the Holy Spirit. What is the Spirit telling you to do? Do not ignore it. Do not delay. Do not disobey.
Submit to the will and word of God.
Is the Father calling you to come to the Son today.
The Son says that all who come to Him He will not cast out.
He is not looking for perfection – He will perfect you.
He is not looking for holiness - He is holy for you.
He is not looking for righteousness – He will be your righteousness.
What is your solution to peace with God?
Can you live good enough to get His approval?
Do you think God grades on the curve?
Do you think God will overlook your sin and disobedience?
Do you believe that God will accept you even though you reject the work of His Son, because you believe you are good enough!
Throw yourself on the mercy of a Holy God who despises sin and will not abide it in His presence.
Place all your hope in Jesus and His death to satisfy God’s wrath against your sin.
Trust is Jesus to give you life, for He alone has conquered death.
For those who have received eternal life, consider all that Christ endured for you, and surrender your will, your plans, your future and your life to Him.
James writes: Do you think that the Scripture speaks to no purpose: “He jealously desires the Spirit which He has made to dwell in us” 6 But He gives a greater grace. Therefore it says, “God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” 7Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. 8 Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
Surrender to the influence of the Holy Spirit. What is the Spirit telling you to do? Do not ignore it. Do not delay. Do not disobey.
