The Teachings of Jesus -- Parables of the Sower & the Lamp
Text: Luke 8:1-21
CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW?
(Jesus’ unspoken question, then and today, is whether people hear with understanding)
The Parable of the Sower and the Parable of the Lamp
On the occasion of large crowds coming together
from various cities to hear what Jesus would say.
The Sower sows the Seed
The seed is given to him to sow
He scatters the seed widely
He trusts God to produce the harvest
THE SEED LANDS IN
SEVERAL DIFFERENT ENVIRONMENTS
1, The Roadside Reception
Some fell beside the road
it was trampled under foot and
the birds came and ate it.
THE WORLD AND THE ENEMY
TRAMPLE THE SEED,
AND STEAL IT AWAY
2. The Rocky Reception
It quickly began to grow
then quickly withered
because it had shallow roots
because of the rocks below the surface.
THE SEED IS RECEIVED WITH JOY,
AND THEY BELIEVE FOR A WHILE,
BUT FALL AWAY WHEN TEMPTATIONS COME
3. The Distracted Reception
It is good and fertile soil
and the plant begins to grow,
but other things are growing there also
and the good plant is choked out
THEIR FAITH IS OVERCOME BY WORRIES
AND RICHES AND WORLDLY PLEASURES,
RESULTING IN A FRUITLESS LIFE.
4. The Real Reception
It is good and fertile soil
and the plant begins to grow
and produce a great harvest.
THESE ARE THOSE WHO HAVE HEARD
THE WORD WITH A SINCERE HEART,
AND ARE OBEDIENT, AND BEAR FRUIT.
The Parable of the Lamp
TAKE CARE HOW YOU LISTEN
Lamps are to express the light The lamp that shines will be replenished
An incidental Illustration
v. 19-21 The family of Jesus arrives
and cannot get to see Jesus
because of the crowds.
“My mother and my brothers are
those who hear the word of God
and do it.”
