   Text:  Exodus 15:22 -17:7

God made the bitter sweet

        Exodus 15:22-25 drink

               The people complained for thirst

The water they found they could not

God sweetened the water with a tree

God satisfied the hungry

         Exodus 16:1-7

The people complained for lack of food

               God provides manna for bread
God provided manna sufficient for the day

God provided a double portion of manna on the 6th day

God did not supply manna on the Sabbath

               God tested their obedience

God provided meat for the people

        Exodus 16:8-13 & Numbers 11:18-23; 31-33

The people grumbled for lack of meat

               God provides quail each evening

God provided water from a rock

        Exodus 17:1-7

The people complained for lack of water

God commands Moses to strike the rock

Water pours forth from the rock

God is our provider, but…

       Jesus is our provision

  • Jesus removes the bitterness of sin with the sweetness of forgiveness

  • Jesus is the Bread of Life that comes down from heaven

  • Jesus is the Giver and Sustainer of life

  • Jesus is the Living Water

  • Jesus is the Living Stone

From Bitter to Sweet:  It is written, that the Christ would suffer and rise again from the dead the third day, and that repentance for forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in His name to all the nations.  (Luke 24:446-47)

The Bread of Life: I am the living bread that came down out of heaven; if anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever (John 6:51)

Giver and Sustainer:  He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life (John 6:54)

Living Water:  If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.’” (John 7:37-38)

The Rock: Coming to Him as to a living stone which has been rejected by men, but is [i]choice and precious in the sight of God, (1 Peter 2:4)

Psalm 107:9  For He has satisfied the thirsty soul, And the hungry soul He has filled with what is good.

Psalm 22:26 The afflicted will eat and be satisfied;

Psalm 16:11 In Your presence is fullness of joy; In Your right hand there are pleasures forever.

“If God had perceived that our greatest need was economic, he would have sent an economist. If he had perceived that our greatest need was entertainment, he would have sent us a comedian or an artist. If God had perceived that our greatest need was political stability, he would have sent us a politician. If he had perceived that our greatest need was health, he would have sent us a doctor. But he perceived that our greatest need involved our sin, our alienation from him, our profound rebellion, our death; and he sent us a Savior.”

God provided for our greatest need

               Is He enough for you?
