BE GENEROUS (Kent Smith Notes 12/3/23)

BE GENEROUS

The Principles of Godly-nomics

1 Timothy 6

******************************************************************

Be Thankful

Be Encouraged

Today: Be Generous

In the 1980’s we had Regan-nomics

We are currently living what some are calling Biden-nomics.

TO EMPLOYEES AND EMPLOYERS

  • Employees treat your employers with honor.

    • If your employer is a believer, then be especially respectful and diligent.

    • If someone offers a different understanding contrary to godliness, then they are just trying to create division and strife. Have nothing to do with them.

************************************************

1 Timothy 6:1-5

All who are under the yoke as slaves are to regard their own masters as worthy of all honor so that the name of God and our doctrine will not be spoken against. 2 Those who have believers as their masters must not be disrespectful to them because they are brethren, but must serve them all the more, because those who partake of the benefit are believers and beloved. Teach and preach these principles.

3 If anyone advocates a different doctrine and does not agree with sound words, those of our Lord Jesus Christ, and with the doctrine conforming to godliness, 4 he is conceited and understands nothing; but he has a morbid interest in controversial questions and disputes about words, out of which arise envy, strife, abusive language, evil suspicions, 5 and constant friction between men of depraved mind and deprived of the truth, who suppose that godliness is a means of gain.

In many cases employees feel that they are treated unjustly.

Cases of workforce violence have continued to rise.

We are becoming a culture of victims and snowflakes.

Many are quick to cry how they have been mistreated and offended.

It has become pervasive on social media but also more and more common in the workforce.

As Christians we should demonstrate the best work ethic, being diligent on the job, and supportive of our supervisors and bosses.

As employers we should be fair, kind and generous with our employees as best we can.

GODLINESS CAN BE A MEANS OF GAIN

Some believe that godliness is a means to gain worldly riches and favor.

Godliness can certainly be a positive in your worldly life, but only when it is accompanied by contentment.

****************************************************

1 Timothy 6:6-8

But godliness actually is a means of great gain when accompanied by contentment. 7 For we have brought nothing into the world, so we cannot take anything out of it either. 8 If we have food and covering, with these we shall be content.

Godliness will rarely result in a favorable return as measured by the world.

Principled godly business is often costly in the marketplace and is often shunned in corporate board rooms.

But - Godliness was never intended to be a pathway to financial prosperity.

However - Godliness is a source of godly gain when accompanied by contentment.

Principles of contentment:

Understand that worldly riches and the accumulation of stuff is temporary. (v.7)

If we have the basic necessities of life we ought to be content. (v.8)

Proverbs 30:8-9 Give me neither poverty nor riches; Feed me with the food that is my portion,9 That I not be full and deny You and say, “Who is the Lord?”

Or that I not be in want and steal, And profane the name of my God.

THE LOVE OF MONEY IS A SNARE

  • The desire to be rich is a pathway to temptation.

  • The love of money is A root of many evils.

  • The longing for money has caused some to wander from God and has brought grief upon themselves.

******************************************************

1 Timothy 6:9-10

On the other hand is the worldly temptation of materialism, accumulation, wealth, and riches.

The emotional feeling of pleasure and self-satisfaction when we acquire the things we like.

The unquenchable desire to want something more.

Bigger, better, newer.

Better looking things

Better tasting food.

Elevating our status with others, and bolstering our image of ourselves as successful.

The pervasive self-promotion of social media.

We have become lovers of self, status, and success – as defined by the shallowest of media influencers.

Young people beware: You are being marketed a fantasy, and illusion, that is EPHEMERAL

And if you don’t know that word – look it up!

WISDOM FOR PEOPLE OF FAITH

  • Flee from the pursuit of worldly gain.

  • Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, perseverance and gentleness.

  • Fight the good fight; take hold eternal life.

*************************************************

1 Timothy 6:11-12 (13-16)

What are you going after?

If you are moving – then two things are happening:

You are moving away from some things

You are moving toward something else.

What are you moving away from?

What are you moving toward?

INSTRUCTIONS FOR LIFE IN GOD’S ECONOMY

  1. Do not be conceited about your financial status

  2. Do not fix your hope on (uncertain) worldly wealth

  3. Do good

  4. Be rich in good works

  5. BE GENEROUS

  6. Be ready to share

  7. Build up the treasure of a good foundation for the future

************************************************

1 Timothy 6:17-19

Your value is not based on your finances

Your future (here or eternally) is not secured by finances

Do good – make a difference for others and for God

Let your life be occupied with an abundance of benevolent activities.

Be generous: give more than is asked, and more than is expected,

Now this I say, he who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must do just as he has purposed in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that always having all sufficiency in everything, you may have an abundance for every good deed. (2 Cor 9:6-8)

Be ready to share, hold all things with an open hand. Feely lend, freely give, go the extra mile.

If anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, let him have your coat also. Whoever forces you to go one mile, go with him two. Give to him who asks of you, and do not turn away from him who wants to borrow from you. (Mt 5: 40-42)

Freely you received, freely give. (Matthew 10:8)

Your life of generosity is laying a foundation for the future

The way you handle your finances impacts the future you will leave behind on this earth

The way you handle your finances impacts the future you will experience in eternity.

WE WILL BE RECEIVING OUR LOTTIE MOON CHRISTMAS OFFERING IN SUPPORT OF INTERNATIONAL MISSIONS OVER THE MONTH OF DECEMBER. OUR MAIN INGATHERING WILL BE IN TWO WEEKS ON DECEMBER 17. PLEASE PRAYERFULLY CONSIDER THE GENEROSITY OF YOUR GIFT.
