Community Principle #2: To Serve and Be Served

Text: John 13:1-15

Serving…

LOVE LAY ASIDE TAKE UP

Footnotes:

John 13:1-4 Now before the Feast of the Passover, Jesus knowing that His hour had come that He would depart out of this world to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them [a]to the end. 2 During supper, the devil having already put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon, to betray Him, 3 Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He had come forth from God and was going back to God, 4 *got up from supper, and *laid aside His garments; and taking a towel, He girded Himself.

Reasons we DO NOT serve:

  1. Arrogance

  2. Selfishness

  3. Indifference

  4. Skeptical

Footnotes:

Arrogance– It is beneath me

Selfish – I have better uses for my time and resources

Indifferent -- There are others much more worse off then them

Skeptical -- I ma not convinced that they really need to be helped

Reasons we SHOULD serve:

  1. Social Bonding

  2. Emotional Lift

  3. Communal Good

  4. Godly Obedience

Especially serve Other Christians 1 Timothy 6:1-2

1. Regard others as worthy of honor

2. Do not be disrespectful, especially to fellow believers

3. Serve fellow Christians even more

4 Benefit your fellow brethren

Footnotes:

1 Tim 6:1-2 All who are under the yoke as slaves are to regard their own masters as worthy of all honor so that the name of God and our doctrine will not be spoken against. 2 Those who have believers as their masters must not be disrespectful to them because they are brethren, but must serve them all the more, because those who partake of the benefit are believers and beloved.

Being Served

Receive it

Be Grateful

Duplicate it

Footnotes:

1 John 13:5-10 Then He *poured water into the basin, and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded. 6 So He *came to Simon Peter. He *said to Him, “Lord, do You wash my feet?” 7 Jesus answered and said to him, “What I do you do not realize now, but you will understand hereafter.” 8 Peter *said to Him, “Never shall You wash my feet!” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me.” 9 Simon Peter *said to Him, “Lord, then wash not only my feet, but also my hands and my head.” 10 Jesus *said to him, “He who has bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean; and you are clean, John 13:12-15

Reasons to PERMIT SERVICE

  1. Refusing appears arrogant I don’t need you I can handle it myself

  2. Refusing robs others of a blessing

Serving others and being served by others contributes to the communal bonds of unity and oneness.
