BE TEACHABLE
Text: Acts 18:23-28
Apollos
Eloquent
Mighty in the Scriptures
Instructed in the way of the Lord
Fervent in spirit
Teaching accurately what he knew
Acquainted only with the baptism of John
Priscilla and Aquilla
They heard Apollos
They took him aside
They explained the way of God more accurately
We too must be willing to learn
There is more that we do not know, than what we do know
We must humbly acknowledge that our understanding is limited
We must be open to new facts and explanations
Footnotes:
We may accurately know many things
We may not be familiar with other important truths
Our understanding is always limited to what we have learned so far
Three tests for Discerning Spiritual Truth
1. Spiritual understanding must always be subject to the clear teachings of Jesus as recorded in scripture.
Be cautious of any “new revelation”
or a “secret insight” (see 1 Tim 6:3-5; 1 John 4:2-3)
2. Spiritual truths will always magnify Jesus Christ
All things are from Him and through Him and for Him and for His glory. (Ro 11:36)
3. Spiritual truths will always strengthen and build up the church.
The church is built by Christ (Mt 16:18)
Is bought by Christ (Acts 20:28
And is the bride of Christ (Rev. 19:7-10; C.21-22
