The Teachings of Jesus - The Unfruitful Tree
Text: Luke 13:1-9
THE OCCASION
Report of Galileans killed while offering sacrifices
Report of a tower that fell and killed 18 people
THE (ERRANT0 ASSUMPTIONS When bad things happen it is a sign of God’s punishment
When things are going well it reflects God’s goodness
THE TRUTH PROCLAIMED
Rhetorical Question: Do you suppose they deserved it?
Unless you repent, You will all likewise perish
THE LESSON
BAD THINGS HAPPEN TO EVERYONE
Do not assume yo are blessed because of your goodness.
Do not assume that bad times are a punishment from God.
BUT – REPENT, because sinners WILL PERISH
The Parable of THE UNFRUITFUL TREE
A tree was planted but did not bear fruit
Ample time was given for it to bear fruit
The owner determined to have it cut down
The steward asks for one more year to make it fruitful,
and if unsuccessful, he will cut it down
THE LESSONS
God has an expectation of fruitfulness from us
We have been given ample time to be fruitful
God will not tolerate our fruitfulness forever
