The Teachings of Jesus - Parable of the Builder

Text: Luke 6:20-49

MASTERING THE FUNDAMENTALS OF BEING A FOLLOWER OF JESUS CHRIST

We must learn these fundamentals, just as sports participants must learn the fundamentals of their respective sport:

Football: Block, Tackle, Run, Catch

Baseball: Hit, Catch, Throw

Basketball: Dribble, Shoot, Pass

Tennis: Fore-hand, Back-hand, Serve, & Volley

Fishing: Casting, Hooking, Reeling, Netting

The Occasion:

JESUS’ GREAT SERMON

An encouragement to the common people An inventory of moral conduct

JESUS’ GREAT ILLUSTRATIONS

First Illustration:

WHO IS YOUR TEACHER?

The blind leading the blind

A blind man cannot guide a blind man can he? (NO)

Will they not both fall into a pit? (Yes)

To whom are you listening?

A pupil is not above his teacher

After training, the pupil will be like his teacher Second Illustration:

ARE YOU TRULY COMPETENT TO JUDGE OTHERS?

Why are you trying to correct others, when you have even greater faults?

Attend to yourself first, then perhaps you may be able to help others.

Third Illustration:

WHAT KIND OF FRUIT ARE YOU BEARING?

A good tree produces good fruit, as a good person at heart brings forth good things in life.

A bad tree does not produce good fruit, as a bad person brings forth corruption from the things that they treasure.

Evidence: The mouth speaks

from that which fills the heart

The Great Question

Why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?

JESUS’ GREAT APPLICATION

The one who hears My words and acts on them is a wise builder.

His foundation is solid, built on the rock

When the storms of life come, his house will stand

The one who hears My words and has not acted accordingly is a foolish builder.

His home has no foundation

When the storms of life come, his house will collapse, and his life will be ruined

Be assured: Storms Will Come

Are you ready?

OUR FUNDAMENTALS

AS FOLLOWERS OF JESUS CHRIST: Listen to the Teacher

Attend to Oneself

Bring forth good fruit

Hear and ACT accordingly
